On my blog, I articulated the standard that people ought to be free to the point where their freedom impinges upon another person in some clearly harmful way. Laws against doing physical harm, then, would be clear. Laws which protect minors (I depart a bit, I think, from libertarians on that point). Laws against taking financial advantage of people in ways that abrogate the people's choice in the matter. The adage is "your freedom ends where my nose begins"; laws reflective of that.
-
What I'd tend to do away with would be legal sanction against a person doing things to harm himself so long as no one else is tangibly harmed by that person's choice. Of course, we do this very inconsistently right now. We prohibit usage of "drugs"; most states have laws against suicide. We mandate seat belt usage. Some states require the wearing of motorcycle helmets. On the other hand, alcohol, tobacco, and the worst drug (television) are perfectly legal, as are pornography (long as it's not kiddie porn, which of course I'd be against as well), some forms of gambling, voting for Democrats, "payday lending", etc.
-
I do not argue, by the way, that some of the things mentioned above are without such things as psychological consequences. Suicide has a terrible residual effect on others, I recognize.
-
I'm speaking pretty broadly here, of course, but seems the nature of the beast.

Thanks for the spell check. But the question still stands. What civil laws do you think would be in keeping with God’s holy standard of law and order?
